KEY WEST
Veteran will lead Pride parade

Rob Smith, an Iraq War veteran and journalist who wrote the memoir Closets, Combat and Coming Out: Coming of Age as a Gay Man in the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Army, has been named the grand marshal for the 2014 Pride parade.

Key West Pride, June 11-15, is sponsored by the Key West Business Guild.

Smith, a 12-year Army veteran who lives in New York, served in Kuwait and Iraq.

In 2010, Smith and 12 other activists were arrested at the White House while protesting the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy that barred lesbian and gay soldiers from serving openly. He was later a guest of President Barack Obama at the ceremony that repealed the law, his website says.
