Sail marks National Maritime Day

A jointly sponsored sunset sail Thursday will commemorate America's fallen mariners in the 81st observance of National Maritime Day. Boarding of the Schooner Wolf begins at 5 p.m. Thursday at Safe Harbor Marina, Stock Island.

The memorial sail aboard the Wolf, flagship of the Conch Republic Navy, is co-sponsored by the Port of Key West Propeller Club and the Key West Maritime Historical Society.

Arrival dockside (near the Hogfish Restaurant) is 5 to 5:30 p.m. Space is limited, so people are asked to RSVP to 305-296-WOLF. A $20 donation is suggested per person.

The sailing event, with the casting of a memorial wreath on the sea, will honor the important role of the Merchant Marines in serving the country during times of both war and peace.

Capt. Bill Grosscup will deliver remarks as he has for the past 30 years, and presidents of both organizations will speak at a ceremony that will also be marked by firing of a special "five ocean" salute.
