• The Monroe County Tax Collector held a tax certificates sale on 1,894 parcels of land, which was less than one percent of the tax rolls.

• Lieutenant Commander James N. D'orso relieved Lieutenant Commander C.L. Graveson Jr. as commanding officer of the USS Marlin.

• The Hickory House restaurant on Stock Island was damaged when fire gutted the barbecue shack in the rear of the building.

• The submarine USS Grenadier was back in Key West after a seven-month overhaul at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
