A local businessman asked to appear before the Monroe County Grand Jury to seek a probe of reports of widespread "fixes" of drunk driving charges by certain members of the Key West Police Department.

Islandia highway project was meeting resistance. The highway would have a causeway from South Miami across Biscayne Bay to the island north of Key Largo, then south through the chain of island across Angelfish Creek to a point near the Jewfish Creek Bridge.

The annual Policemen's Ball was held at the Key West Community Center with two bands for continuous dancing until past 1 a.m.

Key West High School valedictorian was Linda Brownstein and the salutatorian was Marth Ann Stark.

Commencement at Coral Shores High School held special significance for nine of the seniors. They were the first to receive all their education since the first grade at the school that opened its doors in 1952.
