50 YEARS AGO:

Winfield Davis, who lived with his daughter, Alma Vaugh, on Packer Street was the oldest person in Key West at 100 years old.

Ted Willey was elected president of the Conch Key Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Corps.

Dr. Herman K. Moore presented a certificate of merit to Paul Newhouse's wife for her work on the fund drive for the National Health Agencies.

The former Mercedes Hospital at 1209 Virginia St. had been converted to a seven-unit apartment building. It was once the residence of cigar factory owner Edwardo Gato and stood in the middle of Bayview Park.
