50 YEARS AGO:

• The Monroe County Commission approved a resolution authorizing the study of the Islandia Scenic Highway project linking North Key Largo to Dade County but refused to commit secondary road funds.

• Work began on $5.2 million worth of construction at the Naval Air Station, including new barracks and an Army air defense complex.

• The two funeral homes that provided ambulance service to Key West told the city and county they were suspending operations on July 21.

• Jack Hyman retired from the Naval Air Station after more than 32 years of service in the civilian and military branches of government.
