Trash contract signed Wed.

City officials Wednesday signed the 7-year, $53 million contract with Waste Management that will bring back twice weekly curbside pickup to the island come Jan. 1.

"The terms of our current agreement are in place until then," said Utilities Manager Jay Gewin in an email to city staff.

City commissioners May 6 awarded the deal to Waste Management, which has had the city's trash collection deal since 1999, despite Gewin's report recommending Advanced Disposal Services as the lowest bidder. Last summer, the city scaled back waste pickup to once weekly in an effort to promote recycling.
