Body found near bridge

The body of Jim Pierce, 70, was found about 8 a.m. Friday near Pigeon Key between the old and new Seven Mile Bridges, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and sheriff's office had been looking for Pierce since his girlfriend reported finding a suicide note Wednesday night. A person on the old Seven Mile Bridge called 911 after spotting the body Friday morning.

Initial examination of the body indicated he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, reports state. Shoes and a loaded revolver were previously found on the old Seven Mile Bridge.

An autopsy will be done to confirm the cause of his death.
