50 YEARS AGO:

• The Army Air Defense Command installed a radar near Rest Beach at Bertha Street to improve the air defense system around Key West.

• Deputy Sheriff William J. Limbert was elected as the employee representative on the newly formed sheriff's department civil service board.

• Key West officially took over collections for burials and grave spaces in the city cemetery from the funeral home operators and undertakers. The sexton's office required all charges to be paid before burial.

• The new officers of the Key West Lions Club were Charles Carnifax, William Ostorhoudt, Les Altman, Mervin Thompson, Gerald Abreu and D.D. Smith.

• Key West Police Chief Armando Perez Jr. named patrol officers Luis Molina, Carol F. Key and William E. Hall to the force.
