50 YEARS AGO:

The Jaycees had a full day of events at Mallory Square to celebrate the Fourth but could not arrange for the traditional fireworks because of the lack of funds.

Former policeman Sam Cagnina was in county jail and charged with robbing the armored car at the Kwik Chek Foodstore on Flagler Avenue. At least 10 witnesses had identified Cagnina.

Part-time Key West resident Leicester Hemingway announced he had formed the new nation of the Republic of New Atlantism, which was a raft anchored on the New Bank shoal, six miles off the coast of Jamaica.

Army ROTC Cadet Woodrow A. Sands began six weeks of military training at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was a graduated of Douglass High School class of 1961.
