50 YEARS AGO:

Monroe County Commission set the tentative budget for 1964 and 1965 at $1,067,635. This was an approximate increase of $20,000 over the last year.

A $314,645 sheriff's department budget, the exact amount spent the last year, was submitted to the county commission.

The U.S. Naval Communication Unit was established to replace Communication Department of the Naval Station. Lt. Commander Joseph McMahon was the first commanding officer.

The Monroe County Grand Jury reported that it heard no evidence of voting irregularities which would justify returning indictments.
