KEY LARGO -- A local man died Friday, July 4, after an all-terrain vehicle accident the previous day in Bryson City, N.C., where he was vacationing with his family.
Shane Hamilton, 45, was operating the offroad vehicle with his 10-year-old son riding on the back, when they hit a metal cable strung across the path, said Mark Page, who was also partners with Hamilton in Page's Excavating. The child was not injured in the accident.
Hamilton never saw a cable strapped between two trees and believed he was riding in an open area not far from where he was renting a cabin, Page said.
Hamilton was airlifted after the 5:30 p.m. accident to a hospital in Asheville, where he died the following day.
The case is being handled by the Swain County Sheriff's Office, which didn't immediately return a message regarding the accident.
Along with partnering with Page, Hamilton worked as an underground utility contractor connecting residents to the island's sewer system.
Hamilton is survived by wife Karrissa, daughter Savanna, son Shane Jr. and extended family.
