NORMAN SOMMERHOFF

Norman Sommerhoff, 86, of Cudjoe Key, Fla. passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at his home. He was born on May 19, 1928 in New York, NY to the late Felix and Hildagard (Von Mainx) Sommerhoff.

As a small child, Norman lived in Holland until he was 6 years of age, then his parents moved the family back to New York. After he graduated from Browning High School in New York, Norman served in the United States Army. In the early 1950's he moved to the north Miami area. During that time Norman worked as a lifeguard on Miami Beach and was also a dance instructor at Arthur Murray Dance Studio. In 1972 Norman met Marilyn Fey while they were both working at H&R Block. They finally tied the knot in June 1982 and made their way down to Cudjoe Key to build their dream home.

Norman, who is also known as "Kojak" from his limo service days, enjoyed talking to his passengers about where they came from and what they planned on doing for their vacation. He loved the Florida Keys, the ocean, diving for lobsters, telling stories and spending quality time with his children during summer vacations.

Norman is survived by his wife Marilyn Sommerhoff of Cudjoe Key, Fla., his children: Christopher J. Sommerhoff of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; Karin

S. (Glenn) Graves of Auburn, Mass.; David M. (Elisa) Fey of Cummings, Ga., Michael J. Fey of Cooper City, Fla.; Marybeth (Brad) Harvey of Raleigh, N.C. and Tina M. (David) Geide of Ramrod Key, Fla.; grandchildren Kayla, Brandon, Chris, Randi, Katie, Michael, Brian, Tony, Crystal, Chad, Steven, Jonathan and Carson and great-grandchildren Sean, Kylee, Daniel and Hailey. He is also survived by his only brother, Roy (Bonnie) Sommerhoff of Plantation, Fla.

Funeral services will be held Saturday July 12, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at the Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church 1250 Key Deer Blvd. Big Pine Key,

Fla. Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. until service time at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Florida Keys SPCA, 5230 College Road Key West, FL, 33040, in memory of all of the dogs that Norman loved over the years.

The family would like to thank caregiver Rosemarie Natta with Caregivers of the Florida Keys and to Cyra Boose and the many other nurses with Hospice and VNA of the Florida Keys for their wonderful care, compassion and patience.
