50 YEARS AGO:

The National Park Service issued a letter opposing the proposed highway from Big Pine Key across Florida Bay to the West Coast of Florida through the Everglades.

The height of the First Street causeway bridge was 18 feet, the same as the new Fleming Key Bridge.

Statistics showed that during April, 12,285 motorists indicated Key West as their destination. The year before there were 10,108.

Members of the Florida Keys Barbers Association voted unanimously to continue closing on Mondays through December 1.
