50 years ago:

• Construction started on the First Street causeway. The contractor, D.R. Gaines, and his crew were driving concrete pilings.

• Emergency ambulance services stopped when Lopez Funeral Home took one of its vehicles out of service for repairs. The city and county had been notified that the funeral homes were dropping the service July 21.

• During its first year of operation, John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo welcomed 177,777 visitors, making it the sixth most visited park in the state.

• Former City Commissioner Terry Lee Garcia, who had been charged as an accessory in the holdup of an armored car, was reportedly in New York City.
