In 1933 all the racehorses at the Kentucky Derby ran 6,600 feet. The winner crossed the finish line a nose before the second-place horse. This year's Kentucky Derby winner, California Chrome, for whom the owners paid $8,000, earned $1,417,000, compared to $400,000 for second place.

It demonstrates that a small difference can be very important.
