50 YEARS AGO:

A total of 83 freeholders voted in the election to incorporate the city of Stock Island. The results were 47 against incorporation with only 36 in favor.

Key West passed a new 21-page ordinance that modernized the occupational license law. It took 80 minutes for the clerk to read the law.

Crawfish season was set to open on August 1 with the new legal size limits. The new measurements were 3.5 inches for the head and 5 inches for the tail.

Southern Bell Telephone Company was ordered to pay $63,800 in damages during a negligence suit over a car accident. The judgement was the second largest ever awarded in Monroe County.

Key West police and firemen voted 83-6 in favor of abandoning their separate pension plan and going with Social Security.
