50 YEARS AGO:

The Conch Key Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Corps held a groundbreaking ceremony for their new fire house.

The Key West Police, the Navy and state narcotics agents cracked down on an illegal pill pushing ring headed by a 19-year-old Navy man.

A force of 38 state conservation agents, employing 11 boats and an airplane, discovered 96 crawfish violations with 20 fishermen putting traps in the water before the start of the season.

Lennie and Alyce Milan were the new managers of the Sands Beach Club which had been closed since the previous December.
