50 YEARS AGO:

Newell J. Menendez and E.C. "Red" Cornelius opened the South Florida Electric Company at 611 Olivia St.

The local office of Keyes Realty Company reported it had $1,863,100 in sales during the last fiscal year. The Keyes office was located at 630 Eaton St.

The Downtown Business and Property Owners Association was formed. The leaders were Marty Men's Shop at 533 Duval St., Appelrouth Shoe Center at 604 Duval St. and William Gamble Jewelry at 600 Duval St.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 58, sponsored by AME Zion Church, left for summer camp at Camp Sebring.
