KEY WEST
City to honor police chief

City commissioners plan to honor Key West Police Chief Donie Lee for his 20 years on the job at Tuesday's City Commission meeting.

The commission meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Old City Hall and Lee's commendation is at the top of the agenda.

Lee, a Conch and graduate of the University of Florida, was first hired by KWPD in 1994 and promoted to police chief in 2008 at age 37.

"My goal in life was to become police chief in Key West," Lee told The Citizen in 2008. "I had a scanner and often arrived at a crime scene before the cops. It was in my blood."
