50 YEARS AGO:

• Monroe County commissioners were told the three-acre tract at the corner of Casa Marina Court and White Street would be given to the county for use as a park. The Federal Aviation Agency had used the land for navigational towers.

• The planned highway from Big Pine Key to the West Coast of Florida was put on hold until 1970 because the interstate highway funds were all committed until then.

• Rev. Russell D. Toms installed R. Frederick McDowell as the new pastor of First Presbyterian Church.

• Airman Michael K. Jones completed the first phase of his Air Force basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He was a 1964 graduate of Mary Immaculate High School.
