50 YEARS AGO:

The Boca Chica Bar, Arthur Bernard owner, was located on Highway 1 on Stock Island.

Plans for the second Miami to Key West ocean powerboat race were announced. The race, planned for Nov. 6, was expected to add a $100,000 to the local economy.

Bernie C. Papy Jr. announced that he would be a candidate in the special primary to replace his late father as the Democratic nominee for the state House of Representatives.

School officials estimated that the enrollment in the public schools would reach an all-time high of 9,311.

The Key West Police Department held three separate raids and arrested 13 people for gambling.
