DUI driver rides electric

Key West police jailed a 31-year-old Fort Lauderdale man over the weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after an electric car crashed into a concrete pillar outside Peary Court.

At 4:08 p.m., police responded to the enclave's entrance off Southard Street to find a red GEM electric car with a shattered windshield. A witness said the driver had made too wide a U-turn around the guard house and drove headlong into the pillar.

Both the driver and his passenger appeared very drunk, police said, but the passenger seemed more intoxicated than his friend. The driver refused a breath test and was taken to jail.
