KEY WEST
Mangrove cutting cited

The state Department of Environmental Protection won't pursue formal action against the Key West Yacht Club for trimming the protected mangroves near the entranceways.

Manager Paul Gallagher told state officials this week during a site inspection that he cut back several mangroves because they were dangerously blocking drivers' line of sight when coming and going into the marina, a state report said. He apologized and said he wouldn't do it again.

Only DEP can authorize mangrove trimming. Five mangrove plants were removed but the total damage was on less than 5 percent of the marina's mangroves.
