City commissioners unanimously approved without comment the placement of a bronze plaque at Smathers Beach to honor world champion swimmer Diana Nyad.
The city's volunteer Art in Public Places board asked for a bronze plaque at Smathers, where Nyad landed Sept. 2 after a record 110-mile, 53-hour swim from Cuba without a shark cage.
The same board recommends installing a statue of Nyad in Old Town at a waterfront location. Commissioners approved the plaque at last Tuesday's meeting. A $5,000 competition to find an artist for the Nyad statue is in the planning stages.
