50 YEARS AGO:

Gulf Life Insurance Company held an open house at their new offices located at 301 Duval St.

A shrimp boat fishing near the Tortugas caught a shark estimated at 700 pounds. When the shark was cut open, a man's wristwatch fell out. There was no word on what had happened to the owner.

Key West International Airport hosted six commercial planes from Miami because of Hurricane Cleo.

The Coast Guard saved the tanker Ohio Sun that had lost power during Hurricane Cleo near Sombrero Lighthouse.
