Jose (The Can Man) Garcia passed on in the early morning hours of Sept. 1 at Baptist Regional Hospital in Miami. He had just celebrated his 91st birthday on Aug. 27.
Garcia, born and raised in Key West, is survived by his sister, Orchida (Garcia) Cruz and son Jose Garcia, Jr. While he never finishing schooling, he met with success as a baker at many of the local bakeries of the fifties and sixties. He learned the art of making Cuban bread at Molinas Bakery on Margaret Street. Following that, he was lead custodian for St. Bedes Catholic Church.
After retirement he made it a habit of collecting aluminum cans.
Many early morning joggers and walkers would greet him and his dogs while gathering the cans.
There will be a service at 11 a.m Friday at Castillo and Thurston's funeral chapel followed by burial in the Cruz-Garcia family plot in city cemetery. The family would like to thank Doctors Calleja, Gonzalez-Blanco, and Castillo for their caring touch. A donation to the local SPCA would be appreciated. All arrangements are entrusted to Castillo and Thurston's Key West Mortuary and Cremation center.
