County hopes FEMA will budge on enclosures
County to request federal agency allow downstairs enclosures

Monroe County will ask the Federal Emergency Management Agency to play fair and entertain alternatives to forcing homeowners to dismantle downstairs enclosures.

Commissioner Mario Di Gennaro will ask fellow board members to endorse a letter he plans to send FEMA seeking middle ground in the battle over mother-in-law apartments built in garages and under stilted homes.

It's Time To Leave NFIP

The National Flood Insurance Program has served the Keys well but it's time the county exits the program. Monroe County can gain more flexibility regarding lower enclosures by leaving the program. Home owners will be required to pay a higher premium for flood insurance. Though premiums would be higher, it's much less than what it will cost to remove lower enclosures and the loss of home value.

Thank-you. Homeowners would prefer to pay a higher premium rather than destroy part of their home!
