Team Crikey scores 55.35-pound Kingfish

KEY WEST -- Greg Watts of Winter Haven, caught a 55.35-pound kingfish Sunday to help Team Crikey garner top honors at the Key West Harbour King Mackerel Tournament.

Watts caught the fish on a live blue runner at about noon after a short eight-minute tussle.

Captain Andre Moore of Alabaster, Ala., led the Crikey contingent that also included wife Kim Bain-Moore and Glyn Austin of Palm Bay, to an area south of the Dry Tortugas, about 70 miles west of Key West.

"You don't want to get a lot of bites -- just the big fish," said Watts, who credited the entire team with the catch.

"We felt like we'd been rewarded for our efforts," said Bain-Moore, who landed a 36.68-pounder on the tournament's first fishing day.

"We really just wanted to go out there and catch a giant."

Second place went to team Twin Vee. Veteran tournament angler Dave Faircloth of Tampa caught a fish that weighed 54.02 pounds on a blue runner about 38 miles west of Key West.

Captained by Charles "Skip" Chandler of Port St. Lucie, the Twin Vee team also included Rick Baruta of Tampa and Paul Langel of Fort Pierce, Fla.

Team Salt Rock took third place with a 53.12-pound kingfish. Guided by Capt.Cody Chivas of Belleair Bluffs, Rob Campbell of Seminole, brought in the fish approximately one hour before the tournament ended. Chivas' brother Kyle Chivas of Belleair Bluffs also fished on the Salt Rock team.

The tournament also featured a division for anglers fishing in boats 23 feet or shorter. The divisional winner was the team aboard Knot Me, skippered by Capt. Brian Hasson of St. Petersburg, with a 46.90-pound fish.

The two-day angling challenge, a sanctioned divisional tournament of the Southern Kingfish Association, attracted 129 teams.
