Diver killed in boat strike

A 60-year-old Nevada resident and Key West native died Thursday while scuba diving for lobster about three miles off Key West near the Harbor Keys area.

Norman Williams Jr. of Henderson, whose family lives in Key West, was struck by a 17-foot Boston Whaler when he surfaced away from his boat during a drift dive, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Bobby Dube said.

Williams was the second diver to die during the 2009 recreational lobster mini-season.

A Wellington man, whose identity the Monroe County Sheriff's Office still has not released, died off Marathon Thursday. After catching his quota of lobster, he was spearfishing with three other divers when he became separated from his dive boat and was found floating facedown in the water.
