TAVERNIER -- In a battle of Keys rivals, it was the experienced Coral Shores High girls soccer team that ran away with a 9-0 victory over the youthful Key West squad Friday afternoon on the Hurricanes home field at Founders Park.
Coral Shores controlled the pace of the game, keeping the ball on Key West's side of the field for a majority of the match as the 'Canes out-shot the Conchs, 33-3, in the game.
"I don't want to look past Key West, but we have to work on ball control in a game situation like this," said Coral Shores coach Arthur Paterson. "Key West is rebuilding, but for the most part I think we did control the ball."
Paterson said he was pleased with the way his team moved the ball, no matter what quality team the 'Canes were playing.
"We worked on quick touches into the box," Paterson said about his teams' offensive attack. "There were still some misconnects in the middle so we still have a lot of work to do."
Conchs coach Scott Paul said the game was a good learning experience to play a team of the Hurricanes' caliber.
"To play weak teams would be a waste of time," said Paul. "It makes you feel good to some level, but at some time it's good to play these type of teams."
In the first half, the 'Canes knocked in five goals, three from Jasmine Paterson with four assists from Shelby Regan.
Paterson helped kick off the Coral Shores' scoring by knocking the ball into the corner to Regan, who hit a cross to the back post to Chelsea Russell for the first goal of the match.
A few minutes later, Regan once again sent the ball into the box and this time Paterson scored her first goal.
The third goal came on a counter-attack when Paterson gained control of the ball inside the box and touched a pass to Iris Dunn for the tap into the net.
Paterson and Regan connected twice more before the half to send the Hurricanes into the break with the sizable lead.
With a hat trick already in the book, Paterson sat the entire second half, but Coral Shores still had no trouble scoring.
Dunn flicked in a goal to start the scoring, after receiving the ball from Russell on a free kick. Sam Score got into the action when she carried the ball into the box and nailed a shot into the net.
After a penalty kick was converted by Amber Spaulding, Dunn finished off the scoring with a nice shot from the top of the box, which was set up by a coupe of quick passes from Spaulding and Regan.
Paul said it he hopes his girls learned a lot by playing against the talented Coral Shores team and that it is a start to building in the right direction.
"We want to get lots of experience from a game like this," said Paul. "We can talk to them about executing the thing we want them to do. But until we can put them against the players that show them the way the game is played it's hard to teach them and simulate it in practice."
Paterson said he is proud of his girls, especially since they are now a team with which to be reckoned.
"We're not just the same Coral Shores (that) teams from Miami come and beat up on us," said Paterson. "We're one of the measuring sticks now. It's a good feeling to know that we have worked our way up."
