20 YEARS AGO

Florida Gov. Bob Martinez was in Key West for a luncheon to raise money for his re-election. He was promoting the establishment of shipping lanes away from the coast.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to expand the Everglades Park by more than 100,000 acres and also to study expanding Fort Jefferson National Monument at the Dry Tortugas.

50 YEARS AGO

The small monkey that had been pestering Newton Street residents was captured by sailors from HS-1.

Sam Golan and Charles E. Little announced they were going to build a 100-room Holiday Inn Hotel on North Roosevelt near the head of the island.

The Rev. John Henry Reece was honored for his nine years of service as pastor of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

100 YEARS AGO

Leo DeVera, 17 years old, was killed while hunting near the head of the island when he fell and accidentally shot himself in the abdomen.

Mrs. John G. Weid and son and her sister, Sybil Warren, arrived on the steamer Colorado. Mrs. Weid was taken ill on the trip and was admitted to the Louise Maloney Hospital on arrival.
