Learn about kids' asthma
The Monroe County Health Department has been awarded $1,500 to conduct family-based workshops on asthma and methods for managing the illness in children. The department is currently looking for families with children under the age of 7 who have been diagnosed with asthma and can participate in the eight-hour program during the month of August. The program will be run out of the Gato Building in Key West. Additional rounds of the program will run in the Middle and Upper keys later this year. National Night Out events
The Sheriff's Office will sponsor National Night Out events in August in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and Big Pine Key. All will be from 6 to 8 p.m. and feature food and drinks, personnel from a variety of Sheriff's Office divisions, activities and more.
"The goal of National Night Out is to bring the community together to discuss how we can all make our neighborhoods safer and more secure in the future," the press release says. The date is Aug. 3 for Key Largo, at the Murray Nelson Government Center, Mile Marker 102; Islamorada at Founders Park; and Big Pine Key at its Community Park; and Aug. 4 for Marathon, at that city's community park.

What's bugging those plants?
To find out what creature is chewing holes in the plants or why their leaves are black and sticky, come to one of the four free insect classes listed below. If possible, bring an insect sample in a sealed Ziploc baggie or pill vial.

• Marathon, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 9, Marathon Government Center, EOC meeting room, 2798 Overseas Highway, Gulfside.
• Big Pine Key, 2 to 3 p.m. Aug. 9, Big Pine Community Park meeting room, at the end of Sands Road.
• Key West, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 10, Gato Building, 1100 Simonton St., first floor conference room.
