Stereotypes persist because there are usually enough examples of them in a given group.

So the world is indeed peopled by absent-minded professors, surly waiters and drunken sailors, even here in Paradise. But the more professors, waiters and sailors you meet, a truth emerges. Stereotypes are more the exception than the rule.
