From Cuba to Iran-- are the lessons from 50 years ago still valid?

Fifty years ago this week, the United States was eyeball to eyeball with the Soviet Union over IRBMs (Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles) being installed on the island nation of Cuba, just 90 miles from our shores. The stakes were high and I remember it well. Given the state of the world today, I would be remiss if I let it pass without comment.
