India Lakshmi, a deity of well being and wealth, is often shown holding a coconut. Small wonder when in early Sanskrit writing the coconut is kalpa vrikshan, which translates as "the tree that provides all the necessities of life." The name cocos comes from the Portuguese meaning a grinning face or monkey face derived from the three marks on the end of the nut. The Portuguese called it quoquo....
