C. LEON WILLIAMS
Leon Williams suddenly and gently, in his sleep, left this world shortly after midnight on the morning of Jan. 9.
Survived by his wife and dance partner, Lucy Carleton, and stepson, Seth Mularz and his wife Michelle. Also a brother and three sisters from Ohio.
Leon was born on Feb. 17, 1946, in Belle Center, Ohio. He studied architecture at the University of Cincinnati. Arriving in Key West on a motorcycle 40 years ago, he pitched a tent at Boyd's Campground and was hired on a local shrimp boat. One trip shrimping was enough, and he returned to a career in architecture. His love of sailing had Leon living aboard his rag bagger "Gumdrop" for 10 years, enabling him to befriend many in the live-aboard and sailboat racing community.
His life journey then led him to a love of dancing, where he met Lucy. Together they formed "Learn to Dance with Leon & Lucy" therein giving the community an outlet to cultivate their skills in dancing. Through many years and patient hours of teaching, Leon shared his love of dance with many in our community. He will be missed.
Long may he be remembered -- whether it be in a dance step, architectural design, or under full sail. May your spirit dance through the heavens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Florida Keys Council of the Arts or to the Key West Botanical Gardens.
A celebration of life gathering will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Botanical Gardens.
