Gene Drum's fifth-grade class at The Basilica School of St. Mary Star of the Sea was invited to Mallory Square to watch a rehearsal performance by The Minnesota International School of Performing Arts. These high school students from the ninth through 12th grades, were on a Carnival Cruise from Fort Lauderdale with a stop in Key West. They were preparing for two live shows they were to perform for the passengers on the ship.
