The Coast Guard and police are investigating a missing boater who was last seen at a Stock Island marina about a week ago.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has subsequently taken over the case from Key West police and the Coast Guard has an open case, but they have not yet begun an active search, said Coast Guard District 7 spokesman Ryan Doss.
"We're still assisting in the search and really, at this point we don't have enough information to begin a search," Doss said. "We don't have a point of reference for which side (Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic Ocean) he reportedly left from. So, we're still gathering information and working with police."
A woman in Sussex, England reported on Friday that her husband of 10 years, Michael Tyrone Marshall, was running a recently bought 42-foot Hunter sailboat -- Swept Away -- from Clearwater to Key West.
She last spoke to him on April 16, according to a Key West police incident report. He told his wife on April 11 he was leaving Clearwater en route to Key West at that time with his friends -- an unknown male doctor and his wife -- he met in a yachting association, reports say.
The boat ran into something while in or near Key West Bight at the Galleon Resort and Marina, and was subsequently taken to Robbie's Marina on Stock Island where it was dry docked for repairs
Marshall was sleeping on the boat while it was at Robbie's and the wife told police she didn't know the name of the doctor or his wife, only that he was an emergency room physician from Fort Lauderdale.
On April 16, Marshall told his wife via Skype that he would be leaving Key West the next day for Barbados and possibly stopping in Cuba for supplies, reports say.
Marshall reportedly left Robbie's in his boat on April 20, but that was the last anyone saw or heard from him, according to the reports.
Marshall is described as dark completed black male, 59-years-old , 6 foot tall and 200 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes and speaks in an English accent.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Coast Guard 305-415-6800 or Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 305-292-7000.
