Student arrested for pot
A 17-year-old Key West High School student was arrested on campus Monday after a police officer reportedly caught him smoking marijuana in a restroom during lunch.
The teen was in a restroom stall that smelled like of burnt pot, Officer Henry Arroyo reported, and a search of the student's backpack yielded 2.3 grams of the leafy drug. The teen was taken to the Monroe County Detention Center.
Another student had tipped off an assistant principal that the teen had marijuana, an incident report said. Arroyo was told and went looking for the teen, finding him in the courtyard and following him into the restroom.
Man was Vermont resident
The body found floating Sunday offshore Lower Matecumbe Key was identified Monday via fingerprints as 55-year-old Mark Parent of Enosburg, Vt.
There was no evidence of foul play and detectives believe the death to be accidental, said Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin.
The cause of death is pending toxicology reports, according to Monroe County Medical Examiner E. Hunt Scheuerman.
Good Samaritans spotted the body and called the Coast Guard Sunday morning. Earlier that day, two anglers from the Channel 2 bridge reportedly saw a man under the bridge yelling for help. They tried to throw him a rope but were unsuccessful.
Head Start enrollment open
Parents of children who will be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1 may qualify for Monroe County public schools' Head Start, a federal grant program that serves children from low-income families and a percentage of children with disabilities.
Applications are being accepted now for the 2013-14 school year. Families must meet eligibility criteria for the program.
Head start classes are available in Key West, Marathon and Key Largo. "Give your child a head start," the group says.
