Lois Nell Key Giffen
Lois Nell Key Giffen, age 80, passed away peacefully in Marathon on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, after a month-long struggle with pancreatic cancer.
Lois was born in Hollis, Okla., in 1932 to Audra Griffith Key and Andrew Finley Key. She was educated at the University of Chicago, where she earned a bachelor's degree and went on to study art at the graduate level. It was in Chicago that she met her future husband, Robert Edward Giffen, home on leave from the U.S. Army.
From 1960 to 1988, Lois and Bob traveled the world, living and working in Libya, Australia, Malaysia and England, while raising two sons.
A serious artist, Lois painted in oils for most of her career, and later focused on sculpture. She was active in the Keys arts community and served on the board of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts. Her work has been displayed at the Frangipani Gallery in Key West, the Artists in Paradise gallery in Big Pine and many other local venues.
Lois is survived by her brother Andy, sons John and Mark and grandson Robert.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at Sombrero Beach Park, Pavilion 10, in Marathon.
