CORALIE S. GRIZZLE
On January 25, 2014, after a short illness and unexpected passing, Corkey went to be with her Lord, and also the love of her life, Judd, to whom she was married for 49 years.
Corkey was born on March 31, 1925, in Key West to Arthur Schrader and Hilda Navarro Schrader. She spent her childhood between Key West, St. Augustine, and Miami, where she graduated from Ponce de Leon High School early so she could return to Key West to care for her mother and younger siblings, as her father had passed at an early age.
Corkey began working for the Civil Service as a bicycle messenger, and retired as Supervisor of Administrative Services 35 years later in 1980. During that time and afterward, she also kept the books for the family business. Corkey married Judd in 1948 after meeting him at the USO, where she regularly performed in the singing trio, "The Mellow Aires". They were married at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and then moved to Judd's hometown of Lynch, Kentucky. There she worked at the coal mine company store and he cut meat at the local A&P. They returned to Key West in 1950, and began the family business, Judd's Stop 'N' Shop.
Corkey's genuine kindness to everyone, unassuming personality, and loving devotion to family and faith defined who she was (and who we are as a family). She never missed a ballgame or dance, band, or chorus recital, and was always her children's and grandchildren's biggest cheerleader.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Judd, sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Joe Chambers, brother and sister-in-law, Kenny and Neva Schrader, nephews Mark and David Chambers, and grandson-in-law Josh Yarbrough.
Corkey is survived by her loving and devoted children, Dr. Art (Donna) Grizzle, Kim Grizzle (Mickey) Malgrat, grandchildren Jennifer Grizzle (Ralph) Sanchez, Artie Grizzle, Jr., Samantha Grizzle, Frankie Grizzle-Malgrat (Emily), Wyatt Grizzle-Manning, Paula (Sean) Keohane, Michael (Tina) Malgrat, Jr., and Megan Yarbrough, great-grandchildren Olivia, Alyse, Maicey, Anthony, Kris, Joseph, Brandon, and great-great-grandchild Aubrey, and numerous loving friends and relatives.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, February 1,2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with burial in the Key West Cemetery immediately following the service.
After the services, there will be a gathering for all at 3714 Pearlman Terrace.
Dean Lopez is handling all arrangements.
Corkey exemplified all that is right and good in life. We have all been blessed by her presence and grace. Those of us who have been privileged to know her and be loved by her are comforted in the knowledge that we have all been touched by an angel here on Earth.
