In celebration of National Poetry Month, Florida Keys Community College invites all poetry writers, aficionados and novices in the community to its seventh annual poetry reading, taking place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Led by Professor Hilary Parmentier's poetry writing class, the open mic event will feature recitals of classic, contemporary and self-crafted poems by students, faculty, staff and community members.
To set the stage the students have designed "found poetry" displays created by arranging books so their stacked spines spell out poetic verses. Directions will be posted to guide and encourage people to add their own poems to the display.
"The class this year is excited to continue with the tradition of hosting the event and putting their own spin on it with the display," Parmentier said. "They have all kinds of poems to share at the reading and on the display, so it should be fun."
Anyone interested in sharing poetry at the event is asked to contact Parmentier at firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule a place in the program.
