Magazine survey applauds Keys

Readers of "Travel & Leisure" magazine ranked the Florida Keys fourth among island destinations in the continental U.S. and Canada. Respondents to the magazine's annual readers' survey rated the natural attractions, activities/sites, restaurants/food, people and vacation value of destination islands, said Elizabeth Marsh, the magazine's communications director.

The ranking shows that the Keys are a world-class destination capable of impressing discerning travel consumers, said Harold Wheeler, director of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.

Vancouver Island, British Columbia topped the list, followed by Mount Desert Island, Maine and San Juan Islands, Wash. Kiawah Island, S.C. rounded out the category's top five winners. See the full survey results at www.travelandleisure.com.

Bank provides tide charts

In recognition of the Keys' vital maritime industries, First State Bank continues to provide Keyswide tide charts at all 11 branches and online at www.keysbank.com. The current July-December charts are now available.

The bank has provided the reference guides for more than 10 years as a way to acknowledge the economic contributions of marinas, sailors, fishermen and recreational boaters, said Executive Vice President Tony Romano. The guides include daily low and high tide predictions as well as moon phases.

"We're proud to provide the tide charts to help ensure a safe and fun boating experience," Romano said.

Yard sale fundraiser

Mariners Hospital employees will host a yard sale from 7 a.m. to noon July 28 in the hospital parking lot, 91500 Overseas Highway, to raise money for Project Backpack.

The program provides school supplies for local children whose families cannot afford the educational necessities.

Yard sale shoppers can expect to find plants as well as toys, collectibles, household goods, clothing and fishing gear.
