Alternative girls school at HOB, boys program on hold

Having survived budget cuts that sought to close it down, and two relocations since June, the Keys Center Academy alternative school for girls will open Aug. 27 in space at the Horace O'Bryant Middle School.

That's one week after the rest of Monroe County schools open, a delay caused by a school building shuffle earlier this month that struck when a charter elementary school...

Heather's right

Look, whatever KCA is doing for these girls, it's working. Whatever suggestions they have. listen to them and follow through with them. This ACE shouldn't be a place to "store" troubled boys, it should be seen and understood that it is a second chance and a place of learning and if that is not what they are intending it to be, they should work on their own at home from the internet school. Possibly their failure to do just that will encourage better behavior and a desire to succeed. There is a proven affective method, look at the success of KCA. Oh and George, do not "judge" these girls! Mainstream learning is not for all, teens get pregnant, they did when you were a teen and when your mother was a teen and before that. Men in these girls lives have failed them, or hurt them, some mothers have as well. They are "at risk" of not getting a great education, not of being brutal to children. I do agree that the space at the college was a better choice and a better fit, but they obviously are rolling well the the punches. Give the teachers and the director and especially Heather credit, it is well deserved.

Yes! Heather is right

Excellent staff working with the new Director, Melanie will do it right again. The travesty is over. Political posturing and self-promotion are over. Integrity of the new leadership will prevail. KCA will continue to be highly successful and ACE will be developed and implemented as intended. Thanks to the leadership at HOB for stepping up and thanks to the KCA staff for caring. Kids will benefit!

Well that certainly defeats

Well that certainly defeats the purpose of having an alternative school. Come on Porter, you know better, do not be pushed by the district idiots to keep putting every displaced department into HOB. You need to immediately find a home for the girls, elsewhere and reinstate the boys program as well. This is typically idiocy started by Jara, and now handed on to Porter, who is already starting off with the wrong decisions. You wait until the first at risk girl, attacks some innocent six grader who thinks she is tough. This will not end well.

YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS

You can't be serious to put 'at risk' High School girls in with Junior High and soon elementary children. Great role modeling or is it a big scheme to place more children at risk? Andy Griffiths - 20 YEARS OF FAILED LEADERSHIP - just another example why Andy MUST be defeated.

Too bad bygeorge has no

Too bad bygeorge has no facts. Blame Andy for the road construction too! Why not?

Get your facts straight

The building where the State Department of Juvenile Justice is owned by the county, not the state. It's the county that made the decision.
