Monroe County eyes BP billions

Monroe County commissioners will decide next month whether to enter a consortium of Florida counties seeking a share of billions of dollars in anticipated federal penalties levied against the oil company responsible for the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

Assistant Monroe County Attorney Bob Shillinger, Commissioner George Neugent, County Administrator Roman Gastes...

What a scam

Key Wester pride themselves on being independent, until there's free money involved, then everyone's a victim.

How's that?

Now just how was Monroe County adversely affected by the spill, again?

You clearly have no concept of what it takes to market a

destination and how little it takes to harm that effort. When the press shows big 'tar balls' on Florida beaches, people start cancelling trips, fishing trips, dive expeditions. Those companies suffer, and then of course, those that supply them suffer. When tourists don't come, the hotels and restaurants are empty, and their staff members have no income. Maybe a little Economics 101 would be helpful for you.

Since the TDC spent loads on ads

saying there were no effects on the Keys , the Cities lawyers might want to opt out of the "free money" scam. I hope BP's lawyers saw them ; the City of Key West leadership has become greddy parasites.

you just said

that the TDC spent loads on ads. That money was a direct need to be spent and should be recouped for the costs from BP. As for what was and wasn't done damage wise to us, ask an enviromentalist what these microbes have done. Ask a local sponger what's happening in the sponge beds with the lightest of touch...the giant animals are literally disintegrating into nothing. Be diligent and aware as we WILL be needing monies for reef repairs and to try to correct the ecological damage.

Thanks, Kiki. These people have no clue about how the economy

works and how something like the bad press for the BP mess harmed many people here. Not only do we not even know how bad the long-term damage is to the Gulf eco system, but we do know the damage the rumors from the bad press caused.

Here we ago again

Enough is enough. Back off from the trough, hogs. The people cant afford to keep feeding you!

Perhaps from your phat desk job with Aqueduct or City Electric

or other cushy cuzzie jobs, you saw zero effect on your paycheck. However, those who depend on tourism and have to pay to try to counteract the bad press from the media, have every right to file a claim.

Perhaps this is a 'mind your own business' situation, since you clearly have no idea what it takes to run a tourist-based or tourist-related business.

Huh

What in the hell are you babbling about? You dont know what I do for a living. If you spoke of only the things you know, the silence would be deafening. I didnt lose a damn bit of buisness and if you did, it was your own fault. And I dont want to pay for your losses!!!

Um, YOU aren't paying for anything. BP is paying for the losses

THEY caused. But I guess you weren't aware of that, right?

I'd be interested in knowing what business you own and seeing your numbers. Then we can see what the truth is.

Really

Just how do you think a business recoups those losses? Its passed on to the consumers. And with the inherent diverse interests of a company the size of BP you do not even have to buy their products directly...... so, yes, I AM paying and so are you. And you want to know my business and see my numbers? What a comedian.

SOME of us actually do our homework and take responsibility for

our spending habits. I make it a practice to know what I'm buying, the seller's political affiliation, the manufacturer's affiliation and all about the content. Since I rarely even drive and ride a bike most of the time, I don't buy that much gasoline. As for any other BP product, no...I don't support that dirtbag company nor any of their sub-companies. You know don't you, that Halliburton had a hand in that mess?

BP is one of the highest-earning companies on the planet and thus, they don't have to rape and pillage to recoup their 'loss'. This is but a drop in the bucket to those filthy people. They're responsible for losses to businesses and thus, taxes and other costs to the county. The Federal government made sure that they would pay when they required them to set up the fund almost immediately.

I'd not expect to see your business info because you work for the city, the county or a utility.

I suggest that you actually take responsibility for every single penny you spend. You vote with your dollars every single day. Eating crap food, buying at WalMart and similar places, and giving business to crap companies who don't care for the environment and wellness of the planet shows that you're every bit as bad as they are.

Wow

What you know and what you think you know are two vastly different things. The big picture is way beyond your level. I'll debate elsewhere.

If all you leeches out there

If all you leeches out there already collecting welfare on phony disability claims can find an excuse for some BP claims too you will really be able to live "high" on hog in Paradise.

kiki, what ecoboat do you sell for ?

did you know that barrel sponges disinigrate after spawning ? but leave the root and grow back, maybe thats what he was describing , sponges will outlive man; so don't worry about them.

Ahh. You must be a Bagger. Baggers care nothing about others,

about their health, their making their way in life, or about those who suffered losses from a greedy, inept group of corporations who see no problem ruining our environment. Guess then, you're also one of the 'drill baby drill' followers of Palin.

Drill here, drill now.

People in Key West care about one thing, no matter what they say; real estate values. If oil were discovered in the middle of the Island, all of the aging hippies would sell for a profit and move to Vermont, where they'd continue to whine about the environment. While they use tons of oil, of course.

I believe you're misguided

Those who believe in being good stewards of the planet are not going to 'sell out'. Only the 'drill baby drill' people would do that and would think that way. Remember what we heard the whole time during the Acevedo mess? People were horrified that bad things were said about Bubbas like the Acevedos. Why? Because being crooks themselves, they can't even conceive of someone that is not like themselves. They can't comprehend honest people.

So you think that everyone would sell out if there were oil? I don't think so.
