Hear proposed garbage plan

The City Commission will hear a proposed solid waste master plan at a special meeting to be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Old City Hall, 510 Greene St.

Tampa-based Kessler Consulting Inc. was contracted to develop the plan, which is meant to put the city on a path to "zero waste." The plan, available in its entirety at www.keywestcity.com, is the culmination of 18 months' work that included study of what's in the islands trash over two seasons, and analysis of the city's current garbage service. Initial recommendations included distributing recycling carts and separating yard waste collection.

Learn to teach environmental info

The Monroe County Environmental Education Advisory Council invites all to attend its next monthly meeting, set for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Dolphin Research Center, 58901 Overseas Highway, Mile Marker 59.

The group shares information about environmental education with teachers at its meetings and workshops. The council also sponsors a Teacher of the Year award for a local environmental educator and hosts the annual Monroe County Envirothon competition for middle school students. Fantasy Fest food vendor lottery

The lottery for food vendor booth space at Fantasy Fest 2012 will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the DoubleTree Grand Key Resort, 3990 S. Roosevelt Blvd.

Those who want spaces on Oct. 26 and 27 must be there in person and prepared to pay. Each vendor will draw a number to determine the order of requests. Find sign-up information at www.fantasyfest.com. State licensing agencies and local safety and security agencies will be at the lottery to explain how to proceed.
