KEY LARGO — From trinkets to treasures and dresses to decor, Randy’s Florida Keys Gift Company has established a long history of being a favorite shopping spot for Florida Keys visitors and locals alike.

“If we can help people find their favorite thing to take home, then we’ve done our job,” namesake owner Randy Althouse said. “It can be a magnet, a new pair of shorts or sweater, or something they want to decorate their house.”

Claudia, an associate at Randy’s Florida Keys Gift Company in Key Largo, enjoys showing customers a display of Asian carvings.

The eclectic boutique at mile marker 102.4, oceanside, somehow finds space for men’s and women’s clothing made for the Keys, home furnishings with an island flair, local artwork, affordable jewelry and toys.

Then take time to admire the carved statues from Asia, not too far from the ukulele display.

“Stop in for a fast purchase, [you] could end up spending a few hours looking at all the unique items they have,” a TripAdvisor.com reader posted in a five-star review, one of many.

“We just enjoy meeting people from all over the world. That really is the coolest thing,” Althouse said. “Then seeing those people come back over and over again. You never know who’s going to walk through the door. We’ve had some famous people in here.”

An entrepreneur at an early age, Althouse opened his first shop in Islamorada not long after graduating from Coral Shores High School. Three years later in 1992, he relocated “right after Hurricane Andrew” to a store in Key Largo’s Waldorf Plaza with a focus on baseball cards, comic books and collectibles.

An ever-expanding array of items prompted the 2001 debut of Randy’s Florida Keys Gift Company at the larger store at 102421 Overseas Highway.

Five years ago, Randy and wife Lisa opened a second store, Good Day on a Happy Planet, a boutique with similar themes and equally positive reviews at 907 Caroline Street in Key West.

Randy’s Florida Keys Gift Company is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Call 305-453-9229.
