LAKELAND — A toddler was burned by a flash-distraction device used by SWAT team members in Florida when they executed a search warrant on a home where drug activity was taking place.

A spokesman for the Lakeland Police Department said Friday that the 2-year-old boy suffered third-degree burns to his calves and groin area. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of the non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers say the boy was hiding behind a mattress and the room appeared to be empty when the non-lethal distraction device was used during the raid on Thursday.

The boy’s mother had left the toddler in the care of one of the men in the house.

Officers say the found crack cocaine, other drugs and drug paraphernalia in the house.
