License set, time to get lobster
July 24, 2019
KEY LARGO — On Monday afternoon leading up to the lobster mini-season, the line at the Yellow Bait House was steady with people seeking saltwater fishing licenses and spiny lobster permits.
Florida residents can add the $5.50 lobster stamp on their annual fishing license plus a small shop fee, according to Yellow Bait House manager Jared Posey. Cash only.
“The cost of the annual license fee is $17.50, plus the lobster stamp, $5.50, and the processing fee of $2 gets you what you need to get out there,” Posey said. “Of course, people can call the FWC hotline, but may as well get it while you are here.”
Only a driver’s license is needed and out-of-state visitors can pay the same rate for a three-day pass.
Darrin Doskey, on his fourth annual visit from Louisiana, said he’s made the Yellow Bait House his first pit stop after arriving in the Keys.
“We usually stop here because I know they carry fishing licenses here,” Doskey said. “I like to get it taken care of right away. We all need one to go out and have a good time.”
Posey, between punching in driver’s license numbers, rigged fishing lines and offered advice.
He said the small staff that runs long hours at the Yellow Bait House is always busy.
“We sell the most shrimp around here,” Posey said. “We sell easily 45,000 to 55,000 live shrimp a week.”
The Yellow Bait House also carries lobster bully net packages, live and fresh bait, tackle and more. It’s located at 101741 Overseas Highway, oceanside, in Key Largo. Hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
